Stillness before effort
What is called meditation often begins as refusal.
Thought appears, and the mind leans away.
It resists the movement already here,
then names that resistance practice.
But the disturbance is not in thought.
It is in the one who takes a position against it.
Stillness does not appear when the mind succeeds.
It is present before the struggle to quieten anything.
